I am in need of the dimensions of a 6 volt battery box for a 5u d2 cat with electric start. I have searched the discussion form with no luck in obtaining the correct dimensions for fabrication. Any info is appreciated as Im going to have one fabbed at a shop as a replacement.

I have a rusted out battery box I took off a 5U. I will measure it tomorrow for you if I remember. Couldn't tell you if it was for 6 volt battery, but I'd guess it was. you might consider going to 12 volts, since batteries are much easier to come by...

The top cover to mine is missing. Apparently, it was fastened on by two 1/4" cap screws or thumb screws that fit in two nuts welded into to opposite corners of the box.

Here are the dimensions of the box;

Length inside--12-1/2"
Width inside--8-5/8"
Height--9-1/4"

Stands on round steel feet 1-1/8" long, 1-1/4" in diameter that have a 1/2-20 integral stud on the bottom about 3/4" long.

There is a separate platform in the bottom of this one that measures 10-1/4" long by 6-1/4" wide. The platform has a metal L-shaped leg that extends under and upward with a threaded section on the top. This seems to have been part of way of clamping the battery in place.

Just a word of warning .We just bought a D4 ,with electric start pony .Previous owner had replaced the battery and found the modern battery would not fit in the box ,so cut the end out to fit it in .Battery is higher as well so lid won't go on .
Having the correct size box is all well and good ,but useless if the battery won't fit inside it .

Thanks for the heads up on that.

I wondered if it might be a issue.

I can tell you that a 12 volt group 85 battery will fit in place of the old 6 and 8 volt group 1 batteries.

Here are two pictures of the group 85 battery.
