Just got this D2 5J1057 , Diesel wont roll over , I removed the starter pinion assembly. The end of the plunger rod is sticking out of the end of the sleve assembly , something is worn out / missing on my sleve assembly part number 4B1597 to make the drive mesh with the flywheel when you raise the start engagement lever. Cat sold me a button P/N 4B1443 . NO HELP HERE , they now say my old 4B1597 is no longer available , but the new replacement pinion sleve cost $500. there has to be someway to repair or replace what is missing on my old drive. Any help ?

I don't know if this will help or not but I had a D2 J series that the pony would run but the pinion wouldn't engage. What the problem was is that is there is a rod that's part of the pinion control. That rod was broken and the pinion control would rotate out of position and not engage the pinion. I split the diesel engine from the tranny, measured the broken pieces of the rod and made a new one out of a piece of 1/2" cold rolled 1040 shafting. Just another place to check. . .

Had a similar problem with our D2 3J...We found the teeth on the flywheel ring gear almost completely worn off...plus, the starter drive had come apart...found most of the missing parts in the bottom of the bell-housing...We pulled the engine and replaced the flywheel with a good ring gear...and rebuilt the drive...

You might try using a magnet to see if you have any missing springs, bolts, and such in the bottom of the bell housing... Check the teeth on the flywheel ring gear...

If you have a Parts Manual, look closely at the starter drive and see if you have all the parts...

Used starter drives are available as well as other parts for repair

You might have to pull the engine...

Flywheel looks great, starter pinion gear looks great , but the starter pinion sleve is hollow all the way through , the rod has nothing to come in contact with at the far end, its got something to do with the " wear button , P/N 4B 1443 that cat sold me , only what I am looking for is the size of a silver dollar to close the end of the sleve , the wear button is the size of a dime,, the wear button falls through the sleve cause its too small in diameter.

Here are a couple pics of a 4B1597 drive out of a 5J with the top button and pinion latches still assembled to it. It looks like yours has been broken or worn through from something.

Whoops, looks like OM is a little faster at typing than I am!😊

I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
