I've refreshing the undercarriage of my 1944 D2 5J--between the original rollers and ones I've collected I have 15 double flange and 8 single flange track rollers. Does anyone have experience punching out roller shafts from casings? I'd like to take the best eight shafts and insert them in the best 6 double flange and best 2 single flange casings. How big a press will I need? I plan to use 16 new bearings and call it good enough.

When I did the rollers and shafts on my D2, I found that most of the wear was on the bronze bushings. Some were worn right through to the cast iron in the caps. The shafts were all very usable. I found a whole set of new Caterpillar bushings and pressed them into the collar assemblies that I had cleaned up. The problem with trying to make bushings for these is that one end is "blind" so that you can't just use a cored bushing blank and machine it to the right ID. You would also have to have a piece in the end, and I don't know if silver solder would hold it in or not. You need (4) double flange and (4) single flange. If you try to press the shafts out ot the rollers, you will need a very heavy press. A 30 tonner wouldn't touch mine. That's when I decided that the existing shafts were good enough. You can get bronze blanks for the bushings from McMaster-Carr. They have an on-line catalog. You will also need to replace the seals that ride on the collars. Regal has them at a good price. Good luck, John

I didnt know the shafts press out... but I do know they are VERY hard, I wanted to true the shafts on the lathe and make new bushings but the shafts are not machinable.

I have found that the bushes wear more then the shafts.I got lucky with getting a good set of bushes for my D2.I think they are available form a Cat dealer.
