I'm trying to understand what you are after. From what I've seen, the majority of oil cooler lines have been looped because of leaking coolers. If you want to keep it original, then you could make lines that look N.O.S. or buy some used ones. If you don't care about keeping your machine original then you could keep the line looped. As I understand it, Caterpillar studied the oil temp situation & decided that a cooler was not needed. That is why they were eliminated sometimes in the 50's. At least on the NA engines, I think.
I read the first 2 words "I Had".
Anyways, did you get them bent exact to what?
Yours were cut and looped which means you don't have all the weird bends that CAT put in them to make then lay down on the side of the engine to clear whatever accessory that maybe added to that side.
Easier than explaining it is if you have the correct bends at the correct lengths is to look in them in the service and parts manuals to see exactly how the one lays with the other intertwining it.
I think that is where I first figured them out as I looked at 4 J's which all had them removed because as stated previously, it is found to not be necessary.
Also if they were rotted from dirt and moisture, I would not be surprised if you find the manifold and cooler lines inside the radiator that connect to the cooler is rotted out also.
If not an issue there, then the cooler will probably be leaking at the lower fin tubes due to moisture and trash.

If you are insistent on hooking it up, then yes single braid steel hydraulic hose is fine to use as a substitute.
