In the process of doing up the D2 I have stripped down the hydrualics Tank/pump (No. 41 front mount & running a No.2 toolbar blade).

When I opened up the Hydrualic tank it appears that a previous owner has fitted a home made filter on the retun side. Basically they have plated off the baffle and directed the oil flow through a paper medium filter. There are gaps - so it does not take the flow of all oil (eg: If filter blocked up, the oil would still be able to flow into the tank).

I like the idea of a filter in the hydrualic system but do not want to run a non-standard arrangement, so thought I would put it out there to you gents and ask your advise.

Well, it's definitely a non standard arrangement as the #41 didn't have any filtration and the #44 by-pass filter is a joke. It's not a bad idea though and the installation looks pretty good. Not sure what you mean by gaps to allow flow if filter clogs. Seems any permanent gap would allow leakage and defeat the purpose. Usually there is some sort of bypass relief valve should the filter become clogged. So long as you are aware that the unit is in there and periodic service is required the idea looks good to me.

Thanks Old Magnet. The gap I metion is between the filter housing and the baffle - there is around a 1/8" gap there. There certainly is no bypass or relief valve. So...as you hint, if the filter is not getting full flow due to 'leakage' I may be better off removing the lot and returning to standard.

Thanks for your input. Matt

My D7 has a similar set up in the bottom of the hyd tank. I have never had the tank apart so i dont have any pictures of it up close, but i can take a couple from the top of the tank if you would like.

Thanks Billy. No, dont go to any trouble to take a photo. I think I have made my mind up - to leave the 'extra' filter out. Thanks
