I wanted to share my current ongoing project with my D2 seat. I reseached different sources to buy them. I looked at the restoration quality Mr. Hahn sells but didnt want to spend that much on a tractor that i use. (I've heard amazing quality and worth the cost. However, with two young kids and too many projects, I have to save money where I can) Besides i was raised to fix things yourself and i enjoy these little projects. I looked at eBay and they were around $200-$250. I called a friend up at a cat dealer in Iowa and had him price me a seat from cat at around $450 range. I thought I could build my own for at least the eBay range or cheaper of around $200 or less. So my idea is to build a seat where the wood won't rot, and the staples and hardware won't rust, etc. Even though my D2 rarely sits out in the weather. So far here is where I'm at:

I bought some of the foam from Joann fabric store as well as some black marine grade upholstery.

I decided not to use wood for the base. I may be crazy (especially if it doesn't work) but I'm using a plastic that was left over from a bathroom remodel that is the urinal dividers (piece was new) this material is most like the trex deck board that you can buy. It is around 1" thick and it's somewhat porus. I tested the composite with staples to make sure they would penetrate and hold. I think it'll work. Please let me know if you think I'm crazy or if you have used this type of material...

I ordered "monel" staples from Amazon. They were reviewed as corrosion proof unlike the stainless staples you can buy. They are used for marine applications I guess.

Also ordered some high strength marine UV resistant thread. (Hopefully my mother will be taking on the sewing job) I plan to just have the corner seams sewn together. I want functional and it doesn't have to look original.

I also ordered stainless T nuts that I will use for the armrests.
For the armrests bases I'm using some 3.5 x 3.5" angle iron around 3/16" thick I had laying around.

Right now I'm trying to decide what material to build my backrest seat bracket with the holes and key hole slot. I'm leaning toward a stainless strip or aluminum.

I will try to post pics as I work through this project including prices and where I purchased materials, etc in hope that it may help some one else contemplating building they're own seat. For now, here are some pics of how the start of my project is going...

BTW... I mentioned I ordered from Amazon above to get some hardware and other items for the seat build. Just a reminder if you go to Amazon smile, you can choose acmoc to receive a percentage of what you spend(if I understand this correctly) but you have to start out at Amazon smile in order for that to happen. I'm sure someone else will chime in and give details! Works great for me because I order from Amazon a lot!

Looks great to me, I think you're on to something with the plastic backing. The satisfaction you'll get from building your own will be priceless. I look forward to the finished product.

frochevy, would you be able to make up another couple of the seat backrest brackets with the slots and keyholes for me? They didn't come with the tractor when I bought it. More than happy to compensate you accordingly.

I learned to cover tractor seats at a young age as my fathers fix on the RD6 was more burlap sacks put over what ever spring was pocking your back side. Then one day he came with a piece of heavy canvas and roofing nails, much better at keeping the sacks where they did the most good.

Old couches have nice amounts of foam cheap and buy what ever fabric you like from the professionals. No black for me,ever touched it after a hour in the sun on a 100 degree day.Just fold the corners down like wrapping a gift.

I have Hahn seats for one of my D2s but I'll also add canvas covers (or similar) over them for that reason Ray, with some elastic so I can take them off when not in use.
Actually frochevy, if you are up for making some of those straps, I could do with three as I just remembered the other tractor has nothing

Neil,
I was going to make my brackets non adjustable. I was just going to have the one spot it bolts into unlike the original that is shown in my owners manual. It looks like they had 3 different heights that the seat back could be adjusted to for driver comfort? We're you wanting the adjustable straps or just a set of straps to bolt the seat back in one position?

Thanks
Derek

Ideally the three slots - not sure if that's a lot more to do? More than happy to see if there are used out there, Derek.

Neil,
I'm always up for a challenge. If I'm going to go through the headache of making my own, I might as well do it right. My goal is to find some stainless material to use instead of mild steel. I might be able to reverse-engineer a set of straps (I don't have any originals)If someone can let me know:

1. The spacing (dimension) between centerline of the 3 holes at the bottom of a bracket (how far each position offsets the seat back)

2. The width of the steel flat strap

3. The thickness of the steel flat strap

Or if anyone has a good used strap that they would sell, I could use it as a pattern?

Anyway, Neil I'm not in a hurry so if you are, don't wait around on me!!! I will see about making some extra sets depending on how I am able to manufacture them.

Back in the day before cabs we used "cool cushions" on the seats. Remember those?
