Hello I'm new to the site. I asked a lot of questions earlier this spring about a D2 that I was looking at. That one fell through. I've been talking to a guy about a 3j D2 for the last month or more. It's been sitting in a barn for over 25 yrs. Went to look at it and ended up buying it. It has a little blade on it that angles and tilts. My dad and I worked on it lastnight and this afternoon. We got the pony motor started and running lastnight. Someone has added an electric start that you have to hold belt tension on it to start the motor. I searched the site to answer a lot of questions I had. I got lucky and it came with a box of extra gaskets, manual, etc which included a set of fuel filters. So we checked fuel, tried bleeding, replaced fuel filters and cleaned fuel filter tower out. It was nasty! Bled again and still no luck. Checked inside the injection pump to make sure the rack was sliding freely and everything was good. Removed fuel pressure bypass valve and cleaned it up. Then it fired and we got it started! It sounds/runs good. Checked the clutch, steering clutches, hydraulics etc. Drove it off the trailer and tried out the blade... everything works good. I have the right brake pedal return spring is broke... needs a seat and a few other things. I felt like I wanted to tell this story to people who would appreciate these old machines and how one can sit for so long neglected and still be ready to work 25-30 years later!! Here's a few pics. Let me know what you think...

Looks like a great D2 to me and the fact you got it running again so easily is a real bonus, well done, usually the steering clutches on the D2's will seize up after sitting for so long, enjoy it now.
Congratulations.

Congratulations on the purchase, good thing you caught those dirty filters and got the fuel system cleaned right away. Like Mike said, it's always a bonus when you can get an old machine back up and running without having to perform a ton of major repairs first. Thanks for the story and pics.

I would bet the drain plugs are out of the Clutch compartments, else it has leaky seals.

Is this something I need to check or look for? One steering clutch lever goes back farther than the other. I believe the right one has more free play than the left...

Easy adjustment. Open the cover just behind the levers and you will see the adjustment screw. Spec is 3" free play at the handle top. As clutch packs wear the free play diminishes. You can also get a feel for how much the clutch packs are worn. If the adjuster looks like it has a lot of travel left (long side toward clutch) then you have thick packs.

I have one request. I am going to set up a front pump on my 5J and it looks like you have a nice setup. Can you get some good closup pictures of your pump mounting, and coupler next to the fan pulley? I am looking for ideas.

Thanks.

Nice machine. It sure makes a difference when you can find one that was stored inside. Enjoy and keep us posted.

More pictures showing the tilt blade arrangement would be appreciated also. Looks like someone was thinking when they built that blade and set up.

I got it started this evening and off the trailer (at my house) and parked under the car port. It was getting dark so I'll take pics of the blade setup in the next few days. Where is a good place to buy parts? I noticed the plastic piece that holds the fuel filters had 2 cracks in it before we went to take it apart. There is a picture below... It is seeping around the the edge when it is running. Is that piece available? Also I need the rubber boot that goes over the gear shift lever. I'm also in need of a seat both bottom and back. Speaking of the seat it looks like a previous owner moved the seat up and back? Was this common for people to do?
