Ok folks

My pony motor died last summer perminantly So I found a replacement for it. Once It got here I found that the seller was less than honest about what he was selling. What needed one bearing and a carb ended up having a cracked water jacket missing most of the intake bolts, carb, governor, exhaust had a chipped flywheel and a broken oil drain pipe. The rod bearings are literally paper thin with a gap so big that it is surprising that it could run without destroying itself. The cotter pins were missing for the rod caps so I am guessing it had been torn apart and quickly put back together. A far cry from what I was told the engine was. Anyway now that I am done complaining I am wondering if I can reuse the pistons or do I need to replace them I found that they had previously been beat on and there are burrs on the bottom lip of the piston wall. Can I file this off and use the piston or should I buy new ones as my old ones were destroyed when the motor came apart as it died. I have a neighbor that is going to measure both cranks to find the best one, once that is done does anyone have suggestions as the where or if I can find rod bearings. I have read they are hard to find. If not. I could use info on how to make new ones. Are they poured then machined or just machined out of a block of aluminum. I will be replacing all the bearings since I am so far into this engine anyway. I appreciate any and all help. Thanks

Biggest question for both bearings and pistons is what size crankshaft journals and cylinder bores can you get. Until you know if/how much it takes to clean up those parts, you are wasting time looking for parts.

You might need to sleeve your old pony back to standard and repair a cracked off lower cylinder wall, or maybe you don't have damage there want to have it bored oversize and get pistons turned to fit. Or maybe all you need is a quick hone and a set of rings to fit the pistons you have. I would not be afraid of cleaning up the pistons if they fit the cylinders and ring grooves are in good shape.

It's just too early in the process yet.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

You will fid that Cat has all the bearings in various sizes for bothe rhe big ends and mains, all the gaskets required and rings in various sizes too.

As ccjerseys says you can clean up the pistons .

Dont forgets to clean the block and heads for build up of crud in them, helps them heaps and last longer.
