Hello my name is Thomas and I got a D2 3J that we pulled out from the bush by our place. The Main engine ran when I found it, pony did not ( thrown rod, now fixed) so we pull started it and loaded it onto the trailer. My question is on this cat there is the old short element bypass oil filter, with the brass washable strainer on the bottom and the replaceable throw away filter cartrage on top. I was wondering if anyone had a parts diagram for this style filter because I think the valve has been installed backwards, there is a ball and spring vertically situated on the bottom of the pipe that goes through the brass filter on the bottom. when I tryed to put it back together yesterday, I couldnot figure out how oil is supposed to flow around it. I know that the oil is pumped to the oil cooler and then comes back to the bottom of the filter, but how does it flow around the filter? Thanks

Probably your best bet is to use search function at top of the page. I ran it using "bypass filter "and found this thread that has some pictures of one of the rarer early ones. This topic has been discussed a lot and if you look at the threads that show an attachment, you will hit some pictures and scans that might help. I didn't find any other promising threads in the rest of the search pages.

There is a reference area on this site that should have information on this topic as often as it has been discussed.

If you don't find what you need, post your serial number and pictures of what you're looking at. This may be required anyway because some of these filters have been modified incompletely or using non CAT parts etc over the years and who knows if what you have is shown in any parts diagram or not.

Is the base is the same on the rare early ones as the more common ones? My operators instruction manual shows the short element type supplementary filter in it, but does not show the spring/ ball configuration.

my 5J parts book shows 6 different filter assemblies depending on serial #---along with a field installation filter. some have a spring and a plunger
as ccjersey sad a picture and serial # would help to identify what you have

To be correct it should have a plunger, not a ball. The plunger should face down with spring behind it then the retaining cup with cup also facing down.

Thank you that's exactly what I need to know... I still don't get how the oil flows through the filter. Thanks Thomas

On that version both filters are pressurized with the bulk of the flow going to the bearings and a bleed off by-pass filter with flow going back to the sump. The plunger valve protects against blocked filters. Wasn't until later that the also added a oil cooler relief valve should the cooler become blocked.

At that stage they didn't have full flow filter media but the use of screens was still letting to large a particle by. Thus the addition of the early version of by-pass filtration where they could stand to run a percentage of the oil through a more restrictive element while maintaining the required bearing flow.
