I have a Bucyrus Erie shovel with a D13000 engine in it. I have had it for 10 years and it always ran great but it never seemed like it had a lot of power. The other day, I thought it ran out of fuel. I added a barrel of fuel but same problem. It will run for about 15 minutes, miss a little bit and then die. So I then changed my fuel filters and cleaned out the whole housing which was very dirty. I figured that had been my problem. I started it again and it ran for about 15 minutes, missed and died again. I took my fuel cap off, which is a pipe cap and there was vacuum in the tank. I checked my breather tube and it was plugged with mud wasps. I cleaned it out and figured this was my problem. Rebled it again, fired it up, it ran and I dug for another 15 minutes and same thing. Where should I look now? Thanks, Dave

Check for vacuum in the tank again? Run it with the cap off as a test?

Any pictures of the shovel?
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

The last time it died, I ran back quickly and took the cap off and there was no vacuum. But I could try tomorrow with the cap off. This machine is a 1947 38-B. Thanks, Dave

What have you got for fuel pressure?

Many years before I bought this machine, the gauge cluster was stolen and the previous owners plugged everything off so they could keep running the machine. I should have replaced everything but I just never took the time. Thanks, Dave

Yesterday I took my fuel line going from the supply pump to the tank off and there were chunks of old wasps holding the check valve ball open. I cleaned it out and reassembled it and the machine now runs fine. But I don't understand why the other times when I would start the machine it would pump the fuel back up and run fine for about 15 minutes. Then it must have lost its prime while running. Also I put a gauge on my fuel filter housing where the original gauge is supposed to be plugged in. The gauge needle bounces between 7 and 12 pounds while idling. What should this pressure be? Is this pressure before the filters or after? The machine seems to run great now. Thanks Dave

Fuel pressure is measured after the filters...max pressure is about 15psi.
Can have starting problems if you get much below 5psi. 7 -12 psi at idle is good.
