my D-6 has been sitting for about two weeks and noticed some lubricant on track below left sprocket. What's it going to take and fix this?

Try adjusting up the bearing pre-load first, it has been leaking before anyway, the sprocket will also soon need some attention, there is hardly anything left of the teeth.

in my experience, the outer bearing is more than likely shot, it can be replaced without complete dissassembly of the final drive. you can do it with basic handtools and a hydraulic jack.

Roger--is the hydraulic jack to push out the sprocket? Or can the outer bearing be replaced without removing the sprocket? I know I will have to dig into mine as the sprocket is well worn--just received a track gauge from Bert B

That is the exciting thing with old Caterpillar's.

hi dan, the outer bearing and seal can be replaced without removing the sprocket, the inner seal has to have the sprocket removed. mike meyer replaced his sprocket rings on his rd6 without removing the sprockets or the finals off his machine.

all i did to get at the outer bearings was remove the trunnion cap off the track frame under the steering clutch, remove the outer pivot bushing for the track frame, then remove the outer bearing adjuster, once that is off, you can replace the outer bearings. my outer bearings were completely disintegrated and all that was left were the races. i took my final drives apart and didn't find any damage to th inner race or the remainder of the outer bearings. if i were to do it again, i would try the outer bearings first and maybe the outer seal if it needed it. my machines are not production machines so they would probably last forever, i think there have been some good sprocket ring replacemnt and ressurrection threads before. forgot to mention that i used the bottle jack to lift the back of the machine up far enough to get the out pivot bushing clear of the track frame so i could remove it.

sorry I haven't got back sooner.
Not sure what you mean the bearing pre-load is.
I thought my sprocket teeth look pretty good. How can I tell how worn they are? What should measurements be?
thanks for your reply.

The sprocket runs on bearings, they need to be tight. When they get loose the sprocket wobbles on the shaft and the seal leaks. Tightening the bearing past finger tight is called pre-loading bearings.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
