I have a D-5 that the left hand steering clutch wouldn't release. The adjustment under the cover was tightened as far as it would go. I removed the clutch pack,it measures in tolerance with my D6-B service manual. I haven't taken the discs out yet to see if they are stuck but I assume they are. Why would the adjustment be taken up all the way if the discs are still within spec. (assuming the D6-B has the same spec) I can see a brass collar near the throwout bearing that can be moved with a spanner wrench. Is this an adjustment or something else? I need to reline the brake as it was completely worn out. Thanks in advance.

Maybe I misunderstood as you said the adjustment nut was turned down tight but that adjustment nut has to be backed off until there is slack at the adjuster for things to work correctly.

I was referring to the nut on the yoke that pulls the throwout bearing.

If that is the steering clutch adjustment nut it has to be backed off to fully engage the clutches, there should be slack between the nut and the yoke. Send a pic of that nut.

Has someone adjusted that nut up tight trying to get the clutch to release?

What’s the history of the machine and the attempts to repair this problem?
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

Well I did misunderstand-he's trying to get the clutches to disengage. Sorry about that.

Just thinking about this. Have you checked the socket that the yoke fits in at the bottom of the case. If that were damaged or worn out no matter how tight the nut is it wouldn't release the clutches. Just a thought. Charlie

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
