I recently replaced the head on my D-4 7U. I am getting black oil in the exhaust, Head has a new valves and have been reseated by machine shop. gasket surface has been recut. new oil tubes and rubber seals are installed. When I start it my shed fills full of oil smoke and I have oil spots on ceiling 6ft above exhaust. It seems to start to clear up after running 5 ninutes or so. It was resleeved a few years before I got it. The cylinders mic about 6-8 thousandths over cat spec, so I think bottom end is tight. There is no blowby in dipstick tube or oil filler neck, so I think rings are good. Where can oil be coming from? There are no valve seals shown in parts book. Many old tractors don't have them

There are fellows with more knowledge than me that will better help you, but are you sure it is oil and not fuel or even water that is spraying out. Wet soot appears to be oil. I know on my 7E if I haven't covered the pup exhaust and we get a rain the next time I start it the underside of the canopy looks like hell. You may have already checked this out. Thought I would mention it in case you hadn't.
Have a good day, Garry

Its called lots of names "slobbering" is typically what its called. But the bottom line is its unburnt fuel from idling too much. Think about it, engines cold maybe the Injectors are a little weak. You start it up, the Thermostat stays shut to warm it up as you indicated it clears up in about 5 minutes, meaning when the engine warms up.
The cure?
Simplest is to take it out and work it steady and hard for at least 2 hours (4 to 6 preferable).
If you want to throw money at it, then get some work done on the injection system.

That makes a lot of sense. I believe I have a small leak in fuel filter housing letting air in fuel system. Bottom of housing is wet after sitting overnight. It runs rough when first started. Probably working air out of fuel system. That would explain fuel in exhaust. I will take it out and run it after I rebuild undercarriage. Thanks again.
