When you have a choice, always take the stronger bolts. You never know when you may catch a point of a rock that can stop you in your tracks and really torque the bolts. I use the dome head because they have more meat on the head.
Hello dtcohen, if your machine is intended for hard work, the grade 8 bolts might not be strong enough. Grade 8 bolts are identified by six radial slashes. Caterpillar cutting edge bolts have seven radial slashes denoting a higher strength rating. Sorry for the confusing attachments, you might need to save the images to your computer and then enlarge them for clarity. The nuts should be re-tightened after a initial "break-in" period.

Thanks for the responses! Interesting information. The local fastenal store had grade 5 dome head bolts that were the right size and I didn't see the responses until after I did my rounds today, so don't judge me too much . I am going to give them a go since the dozer will only see light use. If they give me any problems then I will swap them out.
So I took another look at the bolts I got and the actually are grade 8.
All you need to do is check that they're still tight after use (every use) and look for evidence of movement
How much are they quoting for bolts?
I am. in the process of reversing the cutting edge on my D8. I have all the nuts cut but can't break it loose yet. Individual bolts are$4.50 plus at Ace. I can order a box of 100 for less than $2 each. I need 46 I think.
