Ricky, when the journal is an end one, like #1 or #6, it's minimal risk to weld it up and turn it back down to whatever size you have. The risk is around straightening the crank after welding - when it's close to the end, it might not need any straightening. This is information I received from the machine shop I took my 5U crank to, where they built up the rear main journal and turned it back down to std. This shop has been around for years and has worked on a lot of diesel equipment so I was comfortable with their explanation. It's definitely cheaper than a new crank - $250 for the job.
I am in North Carolina, where are you located, and would you share who fixed your crank
Thank You, for your reply and your past experience with your crank
Hi Ricky,
D&H Performance are now part of Caledonia Diesel, 2905 Simpson Rd, Caledonia NY 14423 (585) 538 4395
I haven't dealt with them since they moved from Batavia but I'm sure they're still reputable. I'm in Pittsford NY
Ricky,
Check around for somebody who does re-chroming. I recently had my crankshaft for the pony engine on my D8 14A built back up to standard from .020 under. Not cheap but came out real good.
