Nearing on 2 years ago a friend and I bought a 1956 8U with a 9U undercarriage. My first dozer, his ??? of many and 4th D6. It has electric start, engine and hydraulics ran good, a snappy clutch, and bolt-on sprockets. We had it shipped up to my family's property where it's been sitting as life put it on the back burner. Now, I believe this fall we'll be starting to get around to it.
First major issue is the rusted stuck RH steering clutch. It's been determined it needs to come out. Rotten wood canopy, seat and tank have been removed. We started to try to unbolt it but it's proven so rusty it took an hour to torch and wrench one bolt out. Besides the usual penetrants and heat are there any tips to getting these out?
Second question is another rusty part question. The PO was a horse farm along a river and they never took the track adjuster guards off to shovel the silt out. Now they are completely rusted and some parts started to rot away. If I want to modernize this are any of the later series D5 or D6 hydraulic track adjusters interchangable onto this? Would be nicer than turning a wrench but if not I'll make do.
Last (for now), has anyone fabricated a sturdy canopy for a 8/9U? Although I'm good with woodworking I don't care much for the factory canopy that came with it. I'd like to see pics of your creations.
This has been a cool site to peruse so far. Thanks in advance for the info.
