Cotter pins

Curious to what everyone thinks about cotter pins on rod and main cap bearing caps. Use them as previous assembly or as some of my engine people have said just torque to spec and leave them out?

Like to hear from Sasquatch or other builders.

Some things you just do as that was the way the original designers wanted.
Me personally I always put the cotter pins back in!

I do too. And what's the downside of fitting them anyway (properly of course).

I do too. And what's the downside of fitting them anyway (properly of course).
I got my 955H with a damaged crank, piston and rod because the previous owner had the engine rebuilt and they didn't put the cotter pins in the rod bolts. The nuts on #1 rod came loose damaged crank, rod hit and cracked side of block. Took 40 thou crank turn, new rod and piston to repair. Cheap insurance to put cotter pins back in.

I put them back in. Sometimes you get lucky and they line up without much trouble. I think it’s easier to put them in then dig the old ones out.

The bolts that are drilled twice at 90 degrees aren't too much trouble to get to next hole. The ones with only one hole, can get pretty tight before you get it aligned! I really had to work to get them in the 48a when we did an in-frame several years ago.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

Yep manual states that the fasteners are robust enough to advance to the next available slot after recommended torque has been reached, or if you're like me and save everything still useable after gutting 5 parts engines to finally get one good block (ask me how I know lol) you'll have plenty more castle nuts on hand to swap another one in if you have one that you're a bit nervous about having to advance too far. Sometimes a different nut will put the slot a lot closer to where you need it to be.
