Does anyone know if cork or gasket paper was originally used
for the #24 front ccu / gear case to cable drum case when assembled ?
Cat part # 4F898 Gasket . Thanks , Kris

Hey Eddie ,

Thanks for your response , the reason I'm curious is; if I need to use a thick gasket
like cork , or a heavy "paper type " gasket material to maintain proper clearance
( end play ) between the idler and drive gears , or does it even matter ?
This is going to be my first time to reassemble my #24 front ccu . Its been apart
for about 3 years so I'm a little fuzzy on it . I have the servicemen's reference book
which will help a lot . Anyway thanks again , Kris

Hi Kris,
the correct hard type gasket material ( not cork as it is squishy) is needed to get the proper clamping forces to hold the cases rigidly in position.
From memory the main drum/gear hub bearings are shim adjusted so the gasket thickness is not super critical for this area.
Cannot recall what if any adjustment is provided for the input shaft ball bearings, BUT, gasket thickneses would affect bearing end float for these ball races--ensure the ball races have no pre-load.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

That 4F0898 gasket only costs $14.59 at the Cat. Dealer here in Oz, so assume it will be around $10 in the USA, buy it then you know you have the exact one required.

Hi Eddie ,

Yes very much so , now I can proceed with confidence . And yes your right on the money about adjusting
the drum bearings with shims ( looked it up in my book ) for pre-load . I'll make my own gasket for the
gear case , pre fit and check for no pre-load " free spin "

Hey there Mike ,

Thanks for the info on the 4F0898 ; So far I've only attempted to source it through
my buddy @ Iron king , with no luck . I will try the cat dealer next . Otherwise I figure to
make my own . Have a good one ! Kris

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
