Don't see those very often, or valves that have the holes or slot.

Hah! Now I know what the slots on the valve face are for!
I’m old enough to remember the cheapo suction cup tool that you spun with both palms.

Those old suction type valve grinders (firestick) were not too bad on the smaller Briggs engines but sure would wear your hands out on a Model A or Ford V-8. One had to be patient. The rotary type valve grinder was a big boon and of course the electric ones were the cats meow. Remember many valves lapped in on the old Ford flatheads. Gads, I hated getting the valves and springs out of the Block on the old flatheads. .

That is cool....I have one similar to that one, only mine has a suction cup on the end to hold the valve.

These Neway cutters are a bit expensive, but they work terrific on pony seats. You can put the seat right where you want it on the valve face and make it as wide or narrow as you please.

OCM, What cutter number/size did you use and was it possibly on a D4 pony? I'm still in the stone age!! :loco:

Jim,

I have two D6 2U size in process and also two D2/D4 Ponys that I'm working on. I bought the CU293 and CU645 Neway Cutters. I chose these because I had a smaller set with multiple heads for small engines and these expanded my range of valve sizes up quite a bit.

Those cutters look like something I might have to get
I have a couple more starter motors to rebuild in the near future. I was lucky to just lap the valves on the last one and my new to me lapping tool is going to be a worker

I've got one of those floating around someplace here. Haven't used it in over 20 years.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
