Been looking at a late sixties early seventies D4D (sorry I don't have a serial number yet) and was wondering the possible pitfalls of this model tractor. A friend of mine in the business says that they are prone to breaking the cross shaft support areas in the rear housing especially if they have had extreme use in the logging industry. I talked to another guy who was a Caterpillar field man and he was not familiar with that being a common issue. Have any of you seen this or other problems? Thanks in advance for your input.

Hi, Dead Axle.
Wouldn't touch it with a barge pole. TERRIBLE contraptions.

Seriously and just in my humble opinion, pound for pound, the Cat D4 series, with the possible exception of the D4C, is one of the best crawler tractor lines that God ever let anybody burn diesel fuel in. About as close to bulletproof as a small crawler can be.

Just my 0.02.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

I bought one from your neck of the woods ( Eugene ) mine is a 66' has wet clutch but dry brakes, not sure when they went to a wet deck but if you plan on lots of hours it would be something to consider. Doesn't really matter for me as it will only see limited use.

If it's a ex logging tractor check the frame rail flanges for cracks where they attach/bolt to the steering clutch housing. I'm not aware of cross shaft support issues but then a gypo logger can tear up most anything.

Hi, Bursitis.
Around my neck of the woods, they developed a bit of a reputation for over-heating in heavy work and the 'World-renowned' buzz bomb pony motor didn't win them many friends either. There were a good number of them for sale secondhand at the the dealers shortly after the D4D came out.

Factory direct start , still going strong since 1962 , main thing to look out for is where the saddle bolts to the block for the equaliser spring as it can break out the bolt holes , i also have a D4D7R that has just had an engine transplant and should be up and running soon

Are those outboard mounted carrier rollers an LGP thing or a common conversion over in Europe?

what year or serial number did the D4 get oil clutch and steering clutches? i used a D4H probably in 95 or so and really liked it. i see quite a few reasonably priced D4H around. why are they so cheap? was there something wrong with them?

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
