I was running the six tonight pushing up the burn piles. On one heavy push ( engine was lugged right down but still moving the pile) there came a real clatter from #5 or #6 cylinder. Sounded like one of the rockers was coming off. I threw it into reverse to get away from the smoldering pile. Once in the clear I throttled it right back and the rattle sounded better but still there. I climbed onto the track to feel around the motor-decompression-valve covers and the rattle cut back some as I was there. moved the throttle around a little and the sound went away completely. Running the machine for another two hours or so under light - heavy and near stall loads I never heard the rattle again ( and I don't want to )
question is did a valve stick open? and maybe never happen again??? and I should just forget about it.
Or should I take the valve cover off and check things over. These injectors don't have any moving parts do they? like Detroit injectors?
I would pull the valve cover at the least. Strange noises don't go away for long by themselves. If a rocker or pushrod is medded up best to know it now.
