Manual shows the controls in a vertical arrangement. These are horizontal---side by side. Which is which? The writing on the end is not readable. Have only started the pony once and got it going by pulling both out then pushing them both in when it started.

Doesn't matter which way they go but you have to be sure that they are mounted just right so that your thumb can find the spark plug end when you least expect it. Tad

On a 8U or 9U the most common arraignment is that the left one is throttle, out to idle , in for more throttle. Choke is on the right, out to choke. That being said if the carb was ever changed and many were the throttle might be the opposite, in to idle, out for throttle. You can even reverse the linkage on the carb and inadvertently switch the buttons to opposite with very little friction difference in the feel of them. (I did this by mistake once.) As stated above, the only sure way is to look and see which one does what.

I like your comment Tad. I have been putting off installing the insulated boot on my 7U way too long. That jolt hits the elbow and sometimes to the shoulder makes me a bit jumpy.

I’ve been woken up by the zap also lol. Only up to the elbow though. You must have better mag/wire/plug than me if it made it all the way to your shoulder! Hahaha. Some things one doesn’t forget!

A spark plug zap always hurts my elbow, it will jerk back until it hits SOMETHING...I'm highly allergic to electrical shock-my Dad could grab a plug wire & hang on, say yep that one's got spark! Not me...😖hocked:

When I was little, my cousins and I went for a walk away from the beach campsite. We reached a fence that had insulators on the wires - obviously an electric fence but being kids, we thought we'd check if it was on. One cousin wrapped his fingers around the wire, "not on" he says, second and third cousins do the same thing in turn. We're all standing there looking at each other like a bunch of idiots, and then in perfect unison, the three of them jump about a foot in the air and exclaim 'Golly!' or something like that.
I received some "correction" from my cousins for the humor I saw in the situation but the thick ears I received were worth it : )

Comment about the "buzz coil" and the jolt for/from starting engine mag -

I have many memories from D2, D4, D6's with the choke/throttle at the spark plug -- if you did not get "zapped" you were lucky or had an instant recall moment of what you did wrong!

Having been raised with Ford "t"s, I can attest, I think the Magneto is much more pleasant, it hits and lets go! Buzz coil only HANGS ON and ON!

Thanks for the memories, but I really think I can do without a repeat or refresher course!

Hey JM, before you make me an offer for the 3J and starting rope -- I'll PASS! I don't think they have the appropriate sensor or muffler for my anguished verbal assault!

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
