I am new to owning a Cat and I have several questions about changing the oils. I bought a 1947 D4 7U that has about 1200 hours on the meter. The D4 seems to be work well and I want to replace all the oil and have several questions. I was told that it had been setting for over 20 years in a shed.

What oil should I use for the Diesel engine?

What oil should I use fo the pony engine? It may be burning a little oil.

In the Operator Manual and online, I see comments about washing the transmission and final drives after draining their oil. How do I wash them?

Are there others things I should know?
Thanks.

think they recommended flushing with kerosene  personally unless you find a lot of sludge I would just change the oils ,
the only thing that really needs care is the pony  I would change the oil  run it for a few minutes and change it again  ,then again when you have run the tractor ,  every one I’ve had was sludgy and  as the new oils will loosen it and as there isn’t a filter the clean oil soon becomes contaminated quickly  which will cause damage..
use a basic diesel gas spec  15w40   In the fuel pump ,engines and the starter pinion clutch, and 90 gear oil in the backend .. hope that helps

First things first, Manuals are a must. There are some available here on ACMOC but I'm old school and like paper. Anyway, three main manuals need studying the Operators & Owners Manual, the Service Manual and Parts Manual. All the basic information will be in these three manuals.
😃 Congratulations on your new hobby this is fun. Pictures really do help. 😎 when I first started here I posted a picture and was quickly informed by the gurus here that I had a problem I didn't know about. So pictures really do help.
The wife calls it tractor porn 🙄. Jealously 🤫 oops was that in my out loud voice?

I found ATF in the pinon clutch works best.

draint the oils change the filters work it to get it warm and change again only the main and pilot need this. if the trans and final drives are dirty or contaminated with water do them again too.

i personally use caltex(chevron0 delo gold 15w-40 in the main and pilot eninges. textrans tdh in transmission and hydraulics, and torque fluid 454(which has changed name to delo torqueforce 50) all thier heavy equipment oils have been grouped under the delo name.

some of the bungs are hard to find particulary those for the starting clutch housing

I may be old school but in the pony that has no filtering system I would use a non detergent oil. If perhaps the last owner used non detergent and now you put detergent oil in it you will have every bit of crud loosened by the detergent oil floating around in the oil with no way to filter it. My motto in engines is if it has no filter, use non detergent oil. If it has a filter, use detergent oil.

Also on the pilot motor change it often, it only takes 1 liters of oil and that is cheaper than a rebuild.

Personally I change the oil frequently, first I check the smell and contaminate, if it smells like petrol i change, if it has not run for more than 3 months I still change it.

Good oil, is cheap insurance, save dollars in the long run (and only takes 5 minutes to change).

Regards

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
