So I finished restoring a Ten and it idles fine, however when you put it in gear, it only crawls about 20ft before it dies. I figured it was out of gas... so i filled the tank about 50% but it still only makes about 20ft before it dies. I guess the next step would be to go through the carburetor again. Any ideas?

Hi Louis,
good to hear you have a runner again--albeit for a short time.
Suggest you check the fuel tank breather--I am not sure if there is one in the top of the tank or just a hole drilled in the filler cap--others with one of these units may like to chime in.

When Mike Meyer and I were working on his Fifteen Carby we found that the cork float sealer was bubbled and that the float was slightly loose on the needle lever. Sometimes the float would move or twist on the needle lever such that the float would rub on the side of the float bowl. This friction could either stop the needle opening or closing.
We tightened the retaining screw and then found that the float would hit the top of the carby and not allow the needle to seat. We spaced the float down on the lever with a suitable washer.
You have the opposite but just wanted to put it here what can be wrong with the float catching.

Another thing, if you know you have good fuel flow to the carby inlet fitting is to remove the fitting and check for crud above the needle in the housing drilling.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

That is good info there eddie,
hen i stripped my carb i found that my float was loose. I tightened mine up. Is there a good place that does a carb kit? I have tryed emailing a couple of people and get no reply. Does anyone know what you get in a kit? Sorry to hijack this thread but i will be at this point in the near future and want everything ready.

possible also; dirt in fuel lines , you can check the flow of fuel coming out the line wich enteres the carb, or other possibility is that the condensor on magneto is bad , then when it gets warm it is shortcuircuit and engine stops because there is no spark.

Stu,

Another source is Olson Gaskets in Washington state. $35.00 US for an Ensign kit on a PV FIFTEEN. You get bowl, top and bottom meter tower and all other gaskets but no float. Brewzer is looking into getting a soldiered metal float made so we can get rid of the cork. I forgot to ask him at the show about this. Maybe he will chime in here.

I highly recommend that when you are ready to start on your carby, let us know so we can walk you through how to go about it. You can very easily break the top casting and then you are screwed. Marcoten and Eric Christenberry have made some progress on casting new tops but they are very hard to find otherwise.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
