I saw this on craigslist and was wondering if anyone else knew anything about it.

https://siouxfalls.craigslist.org/hvo/6021309837.html

It has Caterpillar plates on it but it is built on a McCormick Deering tractor. The Caterpillar serial number is also X149?

20 Motor patrol front powered by McCormick Deering, i would not call it a prototype but more of a hybrid.

The grader part was designed by Russell who commonly used different power units to move their graders.
Like Fordson, Allis, McCormick Deering, Cat, etc.

It was not until 1928 when Caterpillar purchased Russell Grader Mfg. that only the Caterpillar power units were used.

If i had to guess on the unit in question that it originally was a Caterpillar Model Twenty Motor Patrol that sometime in its working life developed a problem with the power unit so it was changes out for something different.
Also a possibility was this unit was a "left over" when Russell was purchased, and re named once sold as a Model Twenty Motor Patrol.
However if the owner of this unit has some kind of documentation to prove that it is in fact a "prototype" then i stand to be corrected.

Thanks for the info! I figured the McCormick Deering powerplant had something to do with Russell. It just threw me off that it had a Caterpillar serial number.

If you study the frame it looks identical to the Russell #2 and #3.

The only thing that points to a Caterpillar Model 20 Motor Patrol is the Serial Number X-149

Don't forget the Adams wheels as well. someone just put together what they had to make a complete working unit, way to new to be a prototype.

Eric is correct this showed up a while back i believe Side seat called it when it was pointed out that the frame beams or channels should be formed from a single beam and it appears to be a splice behind the plating on the beam sides it definitively a cat grader of some type with the mc cormick power unit

it's nice and he done a great job fixing it up. but i not sure what you can call it. as mention the frame is not right. it has riveting and welding both on it. nice but too rich for me but looks like everything thing is done in. but to start wearing off the new paint by playing with it๐Ÿ˜Š
