Could anyone tell me what would be the best engine oil for a D-318 and a D-13000. Also what is the best engine oil and weight for pony motors. Thank you. Dave

Theres many suggestions used out there but i am using Kendall 15-40 for older engines and Pennzoil 30W for gas engines [starting engines]. A straight 30W diesel engine oil is preferred also for the old engines.

I always enjoy these oil discussions.
The Cat mechanic who delivered my 17A checked the pony level before starting it and discovered that the "oil" was some kind of milky whitish gunk. don't know if the previous owner had used the kill switch rather than turning off the gas or what it was all about, but it was satisfying to drain it out yesterday, run a little diesel through, and fill with fresh oil.

Delo400 15W40 ....NOT the LE formulation that is for the engines with diesel particulate filters. I need to see some data that shows how the new oils perform in old engines with flat tappet lifters before I will use them.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

Ccjersey, I did post a study about a year ago that dug into just that topic. Written by an oil engineer who was also a corvair enthusiast. ( corvairs have flat tap pets it seems). My take away from his study was : is not an issue. But if you search my posts you can get Ed Jew kated on it like me !

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
