Hi everyone i am in the process of buying a 1951 Cat D2 and am trying to find some more info from senior members who may know a little more about these crawlers than I do. The tractor I am looking at needs a new undercarriage and the clutch either needs adjusting or replaced.I have always wanted to own a D2 and now have the chance and would like to take it if the prices are right. If anyone could help me with an estimated cost to put a new bottom on or atleast a 60%+ used one and the price to do the clutch I would appreciate it. I can do the work myself cause I help my dad run a small dirt business and have worked on many newer dozers for another company as well before so labor cost is not needed just the parts. Anyones feedback would greatly be appreciated. Thanks

Steering and main clutch items are not a problem to obtain but undercarriage for the D2 is difficult to find.

Check here for clutch stuff:http://www.steeringclutch.com/

Might consider the D3 undercarriage conversion if you can't find decent used.

Think I recall some discussion about "China" rails but I don't have any specifics

New D2 chain is definitely available, I believe it comes out of Italy, definitely not China, price I was quoted recently here in Australia was $US1,000 a side, though you will need to drill slightly larger pad bolt holes, I was told last night by a Aussie expert that the drill bit required for that job costs $40, and you need it running at a real slow speed.

New pins and bushes are available, I was quoted around $US900 per side to supply and fit on my D2 4U here in Oz by two different workshops 2,000 miles apart, so no chance of colluding on prices I figured😆.

Aftermarket bellow seals for the bottom rollers are also available at around $US30each, though everyone says the rollers are getting harder to find, they can be built up with weld fairly easily if necessary. A nice gentleman over on the ACME site just sold a bunch of D2 bottom rollers, like about 16 of them, plus track frames for $US75 or there abouts for the whole lot, they were located in L.A.

I bought one of those new main clutch plates from General Gear for my D2, it cost about $US180 I think, I also got my pressure plates machined as they had wallowed out. The Machinest said it was one of the hardest steels he had ever worked on and took a long time, much harder than motorcycle brake discs which he figured up till then were the hardest metal to smooth on his stone grinder.

No problem dpendzic, if they had been 7,000 miles closer to me I would of paid the original asking price without blinking an eyelid, I was very surprised that no one in the USA seemed all that interested in them because the price you asked wouldn't even cover the cost of filling my Toyota diesel truck with fuel to go look at them if I still lived in the Salinas Valley.

You are one of the best guy Cat guys I've come across, so it's easy to say nice things😆

General Gear (tractorparts.com) in Idaho says on they're website they have tracks for a D2 good people to deal with as well.

Quoted from their website below:

"Rarely do we get a machine in with good track, and it does not stay around very long. We currently have GOOD USED track for the following machines.

CAT D2 3J/5J/4U/5U,"

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
