Caterpillar 22 timing

Recently bought a caterpillar 22 ran very well one day just stopped running found that the coupler on the Mag had come loose I have it back together and it is running but running very rough I do not have fireing order for this tractor if it’s on the tractor I do not know where to look Or if there is timing marks on the shaft or coupler that I did not see any help would be greatly appreciated

Well I believe I have figured it out about 20 times of adjusting it trial and error now she’s really nice and smooth again I would still like to know if there’s a proper way to go about it so I can double check my work any help would be great thank you

most 4cyl engines fire 1342.

but the method is the same to find tdc on the compression stroke you remove the rocker cover and watch the valves and rotate the engine as normal by hand
1 is on compression tdc when 4 is on the rock ie changing over from exhuast to intake.

substitute for the relevent cyl in your firing order for example if your engine fired 1234 you would watch number 3.
this method allows you to find the tdc without looking at timing marks

and you can verify tdc by using a stiff plastic straw or a piece of wire inserted down the plug hole and you feel it rise and the move away
provided the plug hole is directly open to the cyl and not a pre chamber type head very few engine are prechamber heads

i have timed stationary engines this way be rolling back slightly before tdc i have been able to get them running properly with out timing marks

yes you also use a cheap inductive timing light to find it too but you need a car battery to power the light and a working ignition system on the engine
