Hello my name is I recently Kirk and I am a tool collector from Portland or. I recently acquired a toolbox for Caterpillar service tools. I also have what I believe to be one tool from the kit. I am looking for information on the kit and I am wondering if someone can tell me where to look. I have found that the box was made by MBC in Chicago for Blackhawk. Please also see the attached photo of ratchet extension marked #11, was this included with box?

Is there a book that has been written on Caterpillar tools that is for sale somewhere??
Thank you,
Kirk

Kirk - Nice find. There is no book I know of that gives a history of Cat tools, although it is a good idea for an article in our club newsletter. I have a collection of magazines for Cat service technicians from the late 1930's through the 50's. In them it promotes the Cat Service Tool Kit and gives updates on contents and pricing. The kit included the box and a nice set of tools. The tool box you show first appears in the June 25, 1947 issue. Although the contents were updated periodically, the box itself seems to have remained the same at least until 1959. The next reference I can find is from 1966, and the box is different.

The number 11 on the socket extension doesn't match the Cat or Blackhawk part numbers I see as being included in several iterations of this kit. Hope this helps.

Thank you very much Dtallon, I greatly appreciate the scan of the page that makes my day. I will try in the next few weeks to get better photos of the box and dimensions in case you would like to use it in your news letter.

Thank you very much,

Kirk

The extension pictured may predate the box by a couple of decades. The only extensions made out of square bar I have seen have been made by Bog Manufacturing in the 1920' and 1930's.
