Hey All,
I inherited a CAT Twenty-Two orchard model from my grandfather when he passed a couple years ago. I just recently got it running again and am going through everything to make sure things are in good shape.
Can anyone tell me what the modern equivalent to the "transmission lubricant" is that is stated in the owner's manual? He made many notes in the manual that have been super helpful, but I haven't had much luck tracking this down anywhere.
Thanks,
T
A 90 wt gear oil would of been the go to in the old days. Today you find 85-90 or 85-140 is what most places stock. Most of the multi wt oils are EP rated (extreme pressure) which does not play well with brass/bronze bushings. I can not say if your tractor has yellow iron bushings or not. At stores such as Tractor Supply they some times have the straight 90 mineral oil aimed at the old Ford N series tractor. Hopefully this stirs the old gas Cat folks in to a better answer.
But anything oily in the compartment is better than empty, good luck to you and your Cat.
Gotta agree with Ray54.
My first choice would be a straight 90wt mineral oil, but good luck finding it. Second choice, the 90wt substitute targeted at the N market that I've purchased at D&B Supply (like Tractor Supply, and if you find it buy two and set one back). Third choice would be a 90wt designed for an older tractor combination box, a shared compartment that supplies the differential, transmission, and hydraulic pump for a three point hitch (a lot of the old small tractors were built like this, like the '64 Masey 50). I'd have to be desperate to use a multi-weight EP, but as stated above "...anything oily in the compartment is better than empty...".
I've read reports from folks that claimed you could smell the difference. I can't, my invite to that party must have been lost in the mail.
look for a oil that meet catarpiller TO-4 specification you wont go wrong here. what we use in our d4 is caltex tex trans tdh its a universal tractor transmission differential and hydrualics oil made originally for case ih austoft cane harvesters and cane handling equipment.
