Finishing up some little things on the restoration of PT896. It has the origional ignition switch, but it is not operational. What has other members used to replace it? It seams you would need a switch that when you "turned it on" that it would open the circut. If i have it right, there is a wire from the magnito that when you hook it to the switch and "turn it off" that it would close the circut and ground the magnito. I would like to use the origional front of the switch and maybe replace the interior with a modern switch. Or just replace it with something else. Does Cat have some kind of switch that would work? Thanks, Mark

You can get a switch from caterpillar that bolts right in the original hole, works fine but doesn't look anything like the original key switch. Jon Mark

Sometimes these switches can be brought back to life. Can you still feel the spring inside when you put the key in? If you can feel the spring tension, spray it with an electric contact cleaner and turn it on and off a couple of hundred times. This procedure worked for me.

There was a thread on this BB a couple of years ago that described how to carefully take one of these apart and fix the internals. Good luck.

I have saved a few myself by spraying and switching back and forth worth the time as you can't beat the look of the real deal

I am in the process of getting my original switch back into working condition like Gary CA did. In the meantime I put Part # 311-9368 on my FIFTEEN which fits right in the hole. $39 with tax. It is the same switch as on the D6 9U pony engines.

I pulled my switch apart, cleaned the contacts and replaced the spring. The back can be carefully cut off with a fine hobby saw with a narrow kerf. After cleaning and replacing the spring, I epoxied the body of the switch back in place and have had no trouble with it since the repair.

If you are not worried about looks, you can use a keyed magneto switch out of any lawn and garden tractor. Plus you then get the third position for headlight operation. I used one for my TEN. Works great!

Made a key and tried to get the origional to work without any luck. Tried the part number mentioned above and again no luck. Went to Stowers Cat here in Knoxville and a great parts man fixed me up with an on/off switch that fit in the same hole perfectly. The back looked just like the origional. Said it was used on the 15 thru D9. It was part number 4F4784. Cost was $15.67 with tax. Said they had a lot of them in the system. Mark
