Hello, newbie here. Below is my recent purchase that will be used to clear my 39 acre mesquite and cactus forest.

http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b17/OrangeMach/001-2.jpg

For some reason Caterpillar can't seem to give me the correct year. I have talked to several people there and I have been told it's a '49, '56 and a '58. I think it may be a '58.

Everythying on it works at this point. It has been converted to use a starter but the pup motor still runs and is on the machine. The only problems I have is that the left final drive leaks and I had to replace the fan belt. That was a job.

Post your serial number, someone will have the correct year.

Pretty good looking old D6, they are quite a machine. Mine has also been converted to elec. start.

The tractor is 1952 and the engine is 1956 but still looks like a D6B seat

Now I'm really cornfused 😕 ! I guess the motor was replaced for some reason? I had a heck of a time getting the correct belt for it. Holt Cat ordered it three times before the correct one finally came.

I gues order engine parts off of the 9U23310 and the other tractor parts use 9U10709???

Either the engine has been changed or the rear housing has been changed. Yes I would order parts for the engine by the number on the block.

Ebay is the place to get manuals. I have about a full set for mine and thats where I got 'em.

Here is a page on the other board with D6 serial numbers.

Here is a link to an operator manual. This is one that you need, and was the hardest one for me to find. It shows what oil, how much and where, grease points, adjustments, maintenence, etc.

I have the operators manual, but there has to be a more in depth technical manual. You know, like the old Chilton manuals.

What years are inter-changeable with mine?

The Cat service manual is called a serviceman's reference book. Any 9U will be similar to yours, but the manual will need to cover your SN or say 8U - UP and 9U - UP which includes all SNs.

8U is basically the same tractor, just 60" track guage instead of 74" on the 9U.

I also have a "offbrand" service book, can't remember the name on it. I will look and post.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
