Hello everyone, I have a mid 90s D5C with a forestry package and model 53 winch. While this seems like cutting edge technology to me, the local caterpillar dealer thinks otherwise (LOL) and was unable to offer insight or print material to assist with my dilemma.

Last year when I acquired the machine, it had sat for several years (7-10) and after doing the usual TLC I got everything working tip top….except the winch.

Symptoms: Intermittent or rather inconsistent operation, when activating the control(s). When it spools in or out, it does so with smooth operation and full power. That is to say….when it does…lol.

What I know: I have replaced all of the hydraulic lines on the machine and the internal oil of the winch is appears like new. The interior of the winch body also appears as though it just came of the assembly line.

Does anyone have any experience with this model, or insight as to where I should begin? Could it be a cockpit control adjustment? Issue with the control valve/body?

Thanks Much,
Breadler

Rather ironic I probably could not tell your 90 model from a 2020 model (has to have a bit of dirt and sun fading). But Mother Caterpillar says too old to worry about.Hope someone here is able to help.

Are you sure that's a model 53 winch? The model 53 is meant for D3 tractors. The D5 should have a model 55 winch.

I am unsure of the differences, other than I am guessing the 55 is slightly larger. The data tag says it’s a 53.

I see on eBay a manual for 54 55 57 winches. The sales listing is titled " caterpillar 54 55 57 winch service specs. The title of the manual is" Specifications testing service operations and testing and adjusting". If these winches Are similar to model 53 winches, it may have some very useful information. Old magnet or other folks make know if these winches are similar enough to make it worthwhile to purchase one of these manuals.

Maybe that's why it doesn't work - if it's not the right winch for the tractor?

There is considerable difference between the 53 and 55 winch. The 53 depends on provision in the tractor drive train to uncouple the winch drive. The 54-up series have internal hydraulic clutches to uncouple the drive.
