I just recently bought a Cat D8 . Ser # 46A310. It has a diesel torque converter. Question is there are some tubes at the rear of the torque converter that look like bearing lube lines. Problem is one of the lines is only about 8 in long and goes nowhere. It is called a drain tube in parts book. It leaks what looks like motor oil when running the tractor and leaves a line where ever you go. I have asked some other Cat mechanics but they cannot remember. I cannot imagine that it is suppose to leak. Maybe it is suppose to tie into something else? If anyone knows about this please let me know. Thank You.

Hi Eric,
welcome to the BB.

Here are some scans of the 3 Stage Torque Converter Operation and Lube.

Hope they help.

Yes, the seals were designed to leak (fuel). The two drain lines were manifolded into one. Normal leakage is considered 0 - 10 drops a minute from either the front or rear seal. Higher leakage is normal when starting a cold plant. If the seal leakage is in excess of the ten drops it's time to replace the seals. Do not plug the seal drain tube. Doing so can force fuel into the lubrication system.

Hi Team,
just to add to OM's post.
Scan is from Cat Service Mag. I think.
The actual fuel seals are of the "Refrigeration" carbon face seal type.
They can be relapped if not over worn. We used to send them out to a local place here downunder in OZ.---probably the company is long gone by now as, this was back in the 1960's, early 70's and, we never saw or did one since to my knowledge.
Cheers,
Eddie B.
