Hey guys and gals, I have recently bought a 1968 d7e, and my father was using it this past weekend, and pretty sure he blew the seals in the turbo (smoked blue, used up 3 liters of oil in driving it a mile in the field to get it home) Engine is still ok, it never got away from him or anything like that, its not stuck or anything like that.

Anyways, Im on the lookout for a turbo now. Do any of you fine folks have a decent place to order one? I live in Canada so would need it shipped up to the great white north. Local dealer has a new one for 3000, used for 2000, and aftermarket for 2350. Was just looking to see if these are decent prices, or if a guy could get one elsewhere for a better price.

Thanks.

Service manual shows the turbo used is a AiResearch T12 for the 1968 D7E
Early units used a Schwitzer - 4D
No mention of Garret although they might have an equivalent replacement.

You might want to check your air filter and the crankcase breather before you replace your turbo. How many hours are on your oil change?

Thanks for the replys. I called the local dealer and they just gave me the options of new, used, and aftermarket. Never mentioned anything about a reman cartridge at all.

Im not sure when the oil was last changed, I believe about 2.5 years ago, but it has sat on a dealers lot for the past 2.4 years as well. Breather is fine as far as I can tell, but Ill have to take a bit of a closer look. Would it sitting for so long, dry out the seals or whatever they are called in the turbo, allowing oil to get sucked up?

The turbo is a little black from oil up there, and we almost have it removed, but ran out of daylight tonight.

I'd check the pressure regulator valve (that directs unfiltered oil to the turbo immediately upon cranking). Just to make sure that your brand new turbo doesn't get dry starts.

Also if the bearings aren't shot, a turbo shop might reseal it for you. I took several 4D turbos from older d7e's to a shop and they claimed the bearings had spun. Still hanging onto them in case I can find someone familiar with the older turbos. I am sure these are rebuildable like everything else on this machine.

I removed the turbo yesterday, and the vanes (is that the right terminology) are bent up a little and a few of them are broken at the top, as well as the bearings are shot, which is what probably caused the vanes to wobble and bend up and break.

Best priced turbo I found is 1700 bucks, so Ill probably go with that VS getting it rebuilt.

Next question, should I yank the heads off and see if there is anything going on in there now? My father did drive the cat back to our farm after the dozer started smoking blue, so it had been driven a little bit with the blown turbo. He said besides the blue smoke and little lack of power it ran fine though, no odd noises or anything like that.

Which vanes? With no intercooler to catch the pieces, intake compressor wheel vanes could have showered the engine with debris. Since you ran it back to the shop, I expect by now, any pieces have been sucked on into the cylinders and blown out the exhaust. If it's not showing a miss and there are no large chunks missing from the vanes, I would just replace the turbocharger and run it. Would be a good time to adjust the valves while you have the hood off.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

Yeah i kinda figured that when dad ran it back to the shop it would have blown the little pieces through. Thanks a ton for the advice to check the valves, I will look into that as well! I have a small leak in the pup fuel tank so I think now is a good time to fix that as well. Anything else I should be looking at when Im in tehre

As for which vanes, they would be the ones on the air cleaner side, if that makes sense. Again I apologize for my crappy terminology haha.

Ive been putting off getting a manual, and I should probably get my ass on that pretty soon so I quit bugging you guys on here haha.

Just to update my thread, I ordered a Garret turbo from Alamo turbo up in Alberta, 1900 bucks and i get 200 back for the core when I send it back.

Replaced the turbo, changed the oil, the dozer works great again.
