Anyone know how to remove the final drive from a cat d6 9u? We got the track off. We got it down to what looks like a 2 inch nut (it's bigger).

We did. I’m assuming we need a puller?

Remove the lock on the notched nut and turn counter clockwise, it will push the hub off.

you will get the use of the library if you join up and support the club. this will save you more than the membership costs in my opinion.

Hello mikewood869
What are you trying to achieve here" Replace seals bearings etc? To get the sprocket off the hub you will need a bigger puller than the one you have in the pics there. You will also need to lift the tractor up so the sprocket clears the track frame. That will most likely mean you will need to undo the pivot for the track frame under the rear of the tractor.
As Rome K/G says turning the notched nut will force the holder assembly off the end of the dead axle.

You guys need to be more consistent with the membership drive. This person posts three times and he is asked to join, another person has a thread that is 17 pages long and no mention of him becoming a member. Also there is only parts manuals and operators manuals for the D6 in the library.

What ended up happening is the left steering clutch is stuck from what I was reading online. The guy we got it from said that the d6 sat for a good 15 years, with both steering clutches frozen so it wouldn't turn, he got both engines running and the right steering clutch freed so the d6 could turn right. The. When we bought the d6, the right steering clutch would disengage and engage, but the left steering clutch wouldn't release so we can't get it to turn left. We tried driving it around with the steering clutch lever pulled back to see if that would brake the steer clutch loose and that didn't work. So we're going to take the final drive off to replace the clutches. We were going to take the drive off piece by piece to see if there was anything else that needed to be replaced, but that didn't happen. We got as far as getting that nut off, then we got the to piece that seems pressed on, the next piece in front of the sprocket, we had to turn counter clockwise, that moved a little, that was it, 6th.of a turn then it stopped turning at this point and we gave up (unless there is a special tool to use?). Now it looks like we are going unbolt the final drive from the rear of the transmission (like pulling the whole axles off a Ford 3000 or 8n) I'm guessing the clutches inside are kind of like wet brake of a Ford 3 cylinder 4000 (the idea that I'm thinking of). We’re going to pull that off tomorrow. We do have the op and maintenance and parts book. Like Philc said, there is only two books, I didn’t see a technical books in the library out of the 1115, there’s a lot of info though.

no need to take the final drive apart to repair a steering clutch. the steering clutch can be accessed by removing the fuel tank and the covers,

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
