Hi. I have been working on my 9U replacing the clutch. I have to say that IO have had some great help on this forum on completing the task. The dozer worked great yesterday for two solid hours without any issues.

HOWEVER:

Today, I went back out started it up and let it idle for about 15 minutes and it was warmed up well. Went out and knocked down three trees when th engine started to sounds wrong. I started back at low power to the pole barn about 150 yards away and managed about 130 yards before the number one connecting rod went thru the cast side of the block, the piston thru steel panel, and something thru the oil pan.

The rest of the tractor is in good shape. The obvious question is "Do I replace the engine or scrap the dozer?"

I am looking for any guidance or place to find a good used engine.

The dozer is 9U 28527 with a winch.

Thank you.

Ernie

Hi Ernie,

Sorry to hear about your bad luck, sounds like you have some more work on your hands. As long as the UC, clutches, and brakes are decent I would think fixing the engine would be the best option (although I may be biased!). Although I can't offer any advice on where to find a possible replacement engine I'm sure someone will chime in with advice. Good luck.

Sorry to hear that.....usually takes a lot to kill one of those D318's.....shouldn't be all that hard to find an engine, there were lots of them built and the scrapper hasn't got them all yet. Where are you located?

Thank you for the thoughts. I am in northeast Oklahoma and have no clue where to turn. Any help from anyone would be great!

Respectfully,

Ernie

[QUOTE=ELutter;72551] place to find a good used engine.[QUOTE]

You might give this outfit a try, TRI-COUNTY Parts and Equipment, LTD
I’ve not done any business with them, but I did stop there one time and look there yard over, they have a lot of used equipment http://www.tcparts.net.

If your governor and other peripheral equipment work fine, you can take an engine from anything, DW10, crane, generator set, grader, tractor, boat, you name it. The generator set engines can be a great engine. Lots of them haven't ever accumulated many hours. All would have been done at constant speed etc. Cranes are usually pretty good sources too

Do be cautious, there is a late'50's/early 60's re-design D318G industrial engine with a turbocharger that is not the same old D318 as the rest of them. Not going to be many of those running around though.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

Hi CC,
A little moderation on the engine sources. Tractors are the ones that will have the correct oil pumps and oil pans with front and rear sumps. Graders, Industrial and Marine engines don't usually have this arrangement. I believe he mentioned the pan got nailed so might as well stick to as close a swap as possible, given the choice. Otherwise one would have to take what is available and acquire additional parts as needed. Should look for an 8U or 9U engine first.

True, less to swap is always better.

Sure be nice to find a low hour genset engine though! Sometimes can buy the whole thing cheaper than just a used engine, scrap the extra parts and recover some money.

At any rate, they're out there. No need to dispare or scrap a good tractor over a bad engine.

All, I apologize for the confusion here. I am having trouble signing on, so I had to make a new account.

I would be interested in the MS engines if they are available.

I do have a question for all. My block is 1H5652 and I am wondering if any D318 engine will work and I just (just, ha ha) swap out the parts on the engine. I think there are differences in the oil pans (Old Magnet) and will need one.

Thank you.
