Hi first post on this site.
I have some older machines myself and a few newer models

I used to have 2 d8h's that pulled hydraulic 21yd dolly scrapers sold them off wish I would have kept the pans really enjoyed operating those units.
I'm trying this 5yd scraper pan out on a demo.
So just wondering what size of scraper I could pull with a 180 hp d5b sa non VHP im looking at one, I would use it on short hauls and smaller tight projects and hopefully it would pull my Rome TA20 construction disc ok also.
The tractor is nice looking factory cab new track has 24" pads, i'm looking for a rig that will go in the softer poor underfoot ground conditions and steep inclines and yet pull the load with out killing itself you can look up these (big dog scrapers on machinery trader) I have been loading it with my Kubota m7060 71.5 h.p. 4x4 which weighs around 8500lbs with the front loader, cab and 3 wheel weights on each rear tire, it does ok
and will get a full load in clay still spins after the heavy rain last week it would not climb the steeper incline to the dump loaded had to take lower route.
I know a crawler would stuff more material in this 5yd scraper tighter which would be more of a bigger load and probably would do that every load.
The scraper weighs 5000-6000 lbs nice unit ejector style they make another size that's 6.5 yard I can pull this size of scrapers down the road with my f350
at 60mph easy mobilization for the pull pan size.
is a d5b to much for a 5yd pan or would you go bigger next size.

MATE welcome

D5B SA is a machine I have always wanted I reckon you will have heaps of power wanna be careful with the scoop crawlers dont have wheel slip like a wheeled tractor but it will fill it fine I would think as long as the hauls arent real long it should be ok wheel tractors scoot across the ground nice and quick even with a full scoop on the back and it doesnt take long to carry that extra little bit of dirt your stuffing in

good luck with it all

Hi, Fiat41B.
Welkum too ther 4um. Nice to see an old face 'migrating'..

Considering that they used to hook 100HP 17A D7s to 12-16 cu. yd scrapers. I doubt the 180HP D5B will have much trouble with a 5 yarder. I would not recommend going to the 12-16 yd size that many of the older D7s were pulling 'cos those old D7s had a really TUFF drive train and walking gear, somewhat tougher than the D5B is 'blessed' with, especially considering the relative HP. I don't think I would hesitate about hanging a 6 1/2 yarder behind it though, even maybe a 7 - 8 yarder.

The D5B will handle slightly higher speeds than the older D7s would, especially if you have SALT tracks on it.

Just my 0.02.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

Hey Fiat41b,

Welcome to the BB... I had many of hours on a D5b, it had 30" pads on it. It floated really well on soft ground and was a great slope cat. It was a power shift model. I looked up Ritchie Specs(which aren't always correct) and it stated 105 hp for a D5-b. I have seen many dicussion on this BB stating from 120 hp to some bragging over 200 hp. I remember the D5-b being almost as powerful as our 120hp D6-c, but not as close to our D6d model at about 140hp. I'm not sure what serial number you have, but if you post it maybe someone will have specs on that D5b. As for power to pull a 5 cyd scraper, yes no problem. My 90 hp D6-9u will load a almost 10 cyd heaped Cat 60 scraper no trouble. My 110 hp D6-b is happy loading it. Welcome and good luck on your scraper set up.

I count 16 models of D5B, two of which are "Special Application". All use a normally aspirated 3306. All rated at 105 hp.

IF you go to (heavy equipment resources face book page) they show a d5b direct drive pulling a cat 60 scraper its not a super quality video
and its not boiling the dirt very well for going down hill slope. my thought.

The serial number for this d5b sa im looking at is 26x526

Hey Fiat41b,

Here is a link for face book'rs;

https://m.facebook.com/heavyequipmentresources/

As far as loading it looked ok to me, except the operator needs to use his apron more to catch the boil right.
I feel the D5b has enough go go for a 5 cyd scraper, but I'm not an expert in scrapers either.

No matter what the model D5, it's still an old D6 with single reduction drive and about 105-110 hp is what it is good for.
