posting this for a friend ,any ideas

So we have a Cat D5B powershift that when cold is performing well. However a couple of hours in and we have problems selecting gears. You can put it in any forward or reverse gear and she wont engage drive. Do this a few times a few revs up and down and then your get a gear sometimes its seconds sometimes its minutes.
The oil level is to the top of the dipstick but i suspect it could be to do with the oil level or what the oil covers as sometimes on uneven ground its a real problem. Any ideas ? Many thanks as always.

thanks
graham

Hi, Graham.
First stop - check the filters and screens to make sure they yain't blocked or reducing flow. Then you need to get TCTractors - or some other capable soul - over there with his trusty master gauges and check the pressures. That should tell you if the trans pump is putting out the flow and pressure that it needs to and/ir of there is a pressure loss or blockage somewhere. I KNOW how frustrating that sort of behaviour can be in a tractor - - - - - IF you LET it get to you.

Just my 0.02.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

The safety valve will hold the transmission in neutral or shift to neutral if transmission oil pressure drops below 100psi. Seems you have major leakage or weak pump or both in the system.

Hi, Graham.
If you can put it into a gear but it won't engage, that would seem to indicate that it IS getting pressure, at least to a point. As OM said, if there was insufficient pressure, it would be difficult to get it into a gear and/or it would spit it back out again. So the next question would seem to be what is happening after that point.

I'm no 'hex-spurt' but I still would not rule out low pressure or volume 'cos there may be a difference between what is required to enable a gear to be selected and what is required to ackshully engage a gear - or, more correctly, two clutch packs, one direction pack and one speed pack.

Hope itza a 'cheapie'.

could be sucking air graham, pumps up high on front of converter on them, seem to remember a rubber hose somewhere on the tube that sucks from bottom of bevel gear case. check it and replace it, they also want to have double hose clamps on them.
easy things first mate 👍

thanks for all the replies ,here is an update

Ok so update.
Pulled out the screen and magnets and found some paint film one piece of bronze very small and a button !!! Cleaned it up back together.
Then got some info on pressures and the pump is putting out 380 psi which is around where it should be. The torque converter however is not so clever. Its putting in 48 psi which is right but only 5psi on the way out which is considerably short.
So i guess in the long term its this on the way out. We really need a few days of pushing on and off and then it could come back in the workshop. Apart from this problem she is tidy and we were going to go through her and refurb her in the winter.

cheers graham

Hi, Graham.
Well, at least now you know. I think that is better than not knowing as it gives you - or your mate - some scope for planning.

Those pressures don't sound right.
Pump max is 355psi +/- 12psi
Torq inlet is 135psi +/- 3psi
Torq outlet is 37psi +/- 5psi
Trans lube pressure is 9psi +/- 3psi

Seems you have a torque converter leakage problem.

Pressure to the torque converter relief valve is supplied from the pressure modulating relief valve which could be stuck.

What are you getting for torque converter operating temperature?
