Look what Gilbert font here in Holland, a 1953 Cat D4 tad has bin modified to rubber tracks .
This was done in the early 1970 years before the challenger program.
Till mow we don't now who make this special change.
The only information we have it is used in the sand dunes.

Does it look a lot like the later proto-type AG4 where Cat try the rubber belt on it ?

One more strange thing on this D4 is the radiator head, any idea where this comes from ?

Interesting find😊 😊 ......with three starting motors even!!!!
Looks to be professionally done, may have been a prototype or copy of one as you say.

I like it! .. but I'll wager those wheelbarrow wheels they chose for lower track rollers, don't last 5 mins in operation! It looks like they are carrying spares on the floorplate, for regular changes! With the amount of work that went into the rest of the conversion, with solid bearings front and rear, I'm amazed that they chose those piddly wheelbarrow wheels to carry all the tractor weight!? Perhaps it was a choice called, "use what's readily available" .. ?? 😊

Now that you mention it....they really do look like wheelbarrow wheels. At least one of them seems to be going flat.
Seems I've seen that radiator top tank shape before but I just can't place it.

I was trying to figure where I'd seen the front and rear wheels before, too .. then it dawned! .. they're forklift wheels! Good choice in them, but poor choice in the wheelbarrow wheels! 😊

Hi, Quad.
That certainly is one very interesting find.. I agree with OzDozer ( for once - LOL.) that it is good workmanship right up to but NOT including those wheelbarrow wheels. Surely they could have come up with sopmething a little more robust that that.

Is that top radiator tank originally off an HT4 hydraulic tracked front end loader? Those recesses in the top corners look as if they may have been to allow the plumbing from the front hydraulics to pass through under the hood, complete with bolt holes for mounting clamps.

Thanks for sharing.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

Very interesting thread ,looking closer at the last picture you can see they got a little ruff with the guard on front .Was wondering if that was standard top tank or fabricated as they were not afraid to spend time and money. Also was the AG4 pictured a prototype or production model .I have seen AG6's but they were on steel rather than rubber.

I have an newspaper announcement from Holt Caterpillar in Weslaco, Texas about a demonstration day where they had a picture of a D6SA with rubber tracks. I do not remember without looking if they were full rubber tracks, or just had rubber blocks. This was so that the tractor could be roaded between fields.
