Hi, Bobby866.
Welkum too ther 4um - and to Cat addiction. The serial # should had oughta be onna samll 'ally-mum-yum' (I'm from DowNunder.) plate rivetted to the top left of the back of the steering clutch case. If the plate has gone AWOL, the serial # should be stamped into the case at the same location. There should be a similar plate rivetted to the left side of the diesel engine block just above the starter pinion clutch.

7J would be a late '30's-early '40's D4. If the serial # just happened to be 7UXXXX(X), that could make it a 1956 build.

I am told that the D4's post side tank era - 7J, 2T, 5T - could still be obtained with the side tank although I never did see one that I can remember. As I understand it, the seat tanks started with the 6U-7U tractors but you could still get the side tank if you wanted it. Or maybe have both for the 'long range option'?

Got enny foters, M8? Please?

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

The first D4 7U I bought was 7U 1743 and had the fender tank. As I recall it was around a 1948 model.

Effective with Sn’s 6U5843 and 7U11952 the increased capacity seat type tank for the D4’s were installed, although you could still get the fender tank if one wanted. The seat tank were 30 gallons compared to the 25 gallon capacity fender mounted tanks.

For what it worth, the heavy duty fenders, 3/8” thick were installed as standard equipment on all D4 Tractors including those equipped with the fender mounted tanks which has been retained as special equipment to be used with mounted attachments such as the Traxcavators.

Then a few years later (195😎 one could get a new
“seat tank groups, which feature increased fuel capacity, are now available as attachment for D4 and D6 Tractors. The 1M4136 tank group (tank and seat similar to No. 955 Traxcavator) has a 45 gallon capacity fuel tank an is adaptable to D4 Tractors, 6U8800-up and 7U22627-up. The 1M4135 Tank Group (tank and seat similar to No.977 Traxcavator) has 60 gallon capacity fuel tank and is adaptable to D6 Tractrors 8U7902-up and 9U17315-up.

The larger fuel tanks, due to their extended overhang at the rear of the tractor, prohibit use of some tractor-mounted equipment.” CSB 1958
The WSP (for wide gauge/special parts) designation doesn't normally appear on a "U" model. Check again, the "U" is probably a "J" as part of the "7J" designation which yours would be a 1939 model.

yes we weren't sure if it was a j or a u so the j would make a lot more sense then so what would the special parts mean?

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
