Bought my old D2 with stuck steering clutch on the left side so I have to use the right side brake in forward and reverse to steer it . Trouble is most of the time I have to push the right pedal really hard to activate the brake to make turns . I have not adjusted it yet but assume it probably needs it . The lining may also be glazed or oily , who knows . Any way to clean it in the tractor ? Also the screw underneath the tractor to adjust the band , I know I should turn it in till it stops but can't remember how many turns back out before locking the screw ? The pedal return spring is also broke so I'm replacing it too . Any help would be appreciated .

Generous spraying of brake cleaner thru the 2 bolt adjuster cover. Replace the return spring and while you’re there, grease the pívot shaft and douse it with loose juice as well. Occasionally we need to heat the case to free up old rust/crud as a last resort. Drain your cases while you’re underneath too. D2’s accumulate plenty of moisture. If someone hasn’t already pulled the plugs, it’s a good idea to put a catch pan underneath to harness the muck that might be inside. I think tighten, then back off 1.5 turns? Back to hauling 🍐 pears. Good luck. JM

Oh yeah, how is the left side for the lever? Any “ spring” or good tension to it, or does it stay flopped back?

If you have springiness to it, try adjusting maximum along with brakes. I once was doubtful about freeing up a stuck side, but the driving/mashing of brakes has worked here a time or two. Reverse seems to grab better when using brakes.

Left lever is floppy . I have it adjusted to the max on the square head bolt and have tied lever back to fully engaged position . Left side clutch pack has been soaking a long time but so far no luck breaking it free but I havent used it a lot yet either . Unfortunately the left brake band adjuster looks to be adjusted to the end of its travel and the pedal goes to the floor . I have drained case on both sides . The old time Cat engineers didn't seem to be thinking when they designed a steering clutch housing that could not be accessed without a major teardown .
