hello, i have a 38b bucyrus dragline that came with what i believe is the first model of the d13000 power unit pre 1940s), the original heads were not made to have water jacket directors( no recessed holes for o-ring ), just the head gasket sealed the water ports, i found a good set of heads off a newer unit that use the water directors, my problem is that the water ports on the deck/block are too small for the brass water director to fit in. .. what are my options? can i bore out the water ports on the deck?... cut off the bottom part of the director?...use no directors at all and use copper coat around water ports? ( assuring i can find the right head gasket) ..thanks

Are the original heads not usable? Might try Olson's gaskets for the early head gasket. Don't recall any duscussion on counterboring the block for seals but I don't see why it could not be done.

original heads are cracked between in and out ports..alaska dont have the setup to weld them, one thing that i dont understand is if the original heads didnt come with directors and they didnt leak then why bother using directors and o-rings on the ones that call for them.. the only differance is the recessed water port in the head for the o-ring, copper coat city?

Your leaving out the "director" part where the water circulation is aimed for more effective cooling. If your just going to seal I'd use the Permatex Super "300" Form-A-Gasket.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
