We have new tools from Caterpillar, or not so new but their apps now tie things together. Just wanting to get a feel how many in the club use these programs for their projects. I am from old school when we used the NPR now all this is in the SIS2GO app. I had the change with my PSSR agent to talk to him about being able to have all 21 of my machines on my home page so I can use the new programs to the full extent of their capability. Some of the issues are not being able to enter some of my older machines into the asset portion. Has anyone have all their machines loaded for asset tracking for repairs, SOS & undercarriage reports. These programs have some great possibilities & even a retired guy like me would enjoy to have it working. For us. I know Caterpillar has a ways to go so we can load all our equipment. I am looking for POSITIVE feedback. These new programs will help with our parts research once they get the serial numbers so they can be loaded & the program recognizes them.
I am working with my Dealer, is their anyone in the club working directly with. Caterpillar on the Cat Central App & Vision Link so it will accept our serial numbers?
Please no dealer bashing on this thread. Let’s keep it positive.
Interesting thread! I’d love for our machines to be at least on the Cat Central app, I did check a part number for my 2T yesterday, just a 5/8“ unf bolt but sure enough part number was there, still the same after 80 years. For discontinued parts it’d be great to be able to check specs such as thread/grip length etc.. The whole NPR integration would be the holy grail as finding which part ties in to different machines would be great. For example the final drive oil fillers on some 22s are the same as a D4.. Keep us posted!
I'm not working with them although I have a couple of units registered with parts.cat.com. In theory it would be straightforward to be able to cross-reference part numbers, since they're all stored electronically these days. Cat might still have disparate systems that would need integrating to be able to do such things. I've spent most of my professional IT career doing things like that and the more customers ask for it, the stronger the case that the business owners (meaning heads of Cat departments) can make for funding to integrate them, particularly if somehow Cat can also introduce cost reductions in their processes. The ideal lookup tool from my perspective as a customer would enable:
lookup by machine model and year, or serial #, or equipment type
lookup by part number, part description, assembly
for any part number, also be able to list all models and serial #s that a given part number can be used in
an easy to navigate part supersession listing, in chronological order, with splits by model / serial# if applicable
part description that includes specifications when applicable such as bolt pitch and length (they already do this for some parts), weight (they also do this), and crucially (in my opinion), a photo of the actual object. Late model JD parts listings have photos so you can for sure confirm that the new part looks like your old part, and I've found that it's helped me distinguish between multiple listings on more than one occasion.
To encourage use, don't require a login. None of that information is privileged because it's freely available upon request. They want customers to be able to help themselves help the parts guy home in on the right part and many customers these days are comfortable with self-directed lookup.
Yes, their parts programs can give us all the machines that use it. They have had this for many years in the late Seventies when I started this crazy mechanic thing we called it NPR. It would tell us complete build of the part & all the serial numbers of machines it was installed on. So if you are looking for an obsolete part number you might have a better chance of finding it on another machine of different model that might be sitting around you could borrow it from a different model. I met with a Caterpillar Factory guy today and he is all in favor of making a push to see if we can get our antique machines at least in the systems. I was able to add some zeros in correct spot and got it to show my 5T. D4 machine. No parts information but at least SIS recognized the machine. Niel you being in IT knows this will take some time.
from memory I recall most older machines were in the SIS (Service Information System) system back in the 1990's so IF you can find an old set of SIS Fiche it would be a great start. The ones I saved at the dealer were tossed out after I retired as it seemed Cat no longer wished to deal with out of date machinery and went on a purge of data for machines before a given date.
I stand to be corrected.
Cheers,
Eddie B.
You R correct. I have a set of microfiche in box that I have not unpacked. I think the last up date I got was in 1993 when I was working in Colorado. Wagner equipment was good about getting us their old microfiche. I need to find that information! It is priceless
Yes it is!! Keep us posted if you get any traction moving this forward.
