Did Cat stop selling 5H2471 cement ? I have lived by that contact cement ,especially sticking large multi-piece gaskets to castings as well as smaller gaskets on parts .
Is there any other product on the market as good today in the contact cement product line?

Yes, Cat has switch to mostly loctite products now. The 5H2471 changes to 30540 which is black contact cement in a tube. I miss the
green glue it worked great, even if the lid would always get glued shut.

We've used GASGACINCH for the last 20 years. Copied the local CAT mechanics. Its light yellow in color so you won't feel so bad and you'll like how the top sticks to the can.

Bluox, hope that means they have reinstated it. You can do large or multipart gaskets by yourself which with any other cement you would need help. Just don't ever make the mistake of putting it on both sides of a gasket or you will have to blast. I have used it on both sides of a small cast cover which had the flange with a couple bolt holes broken off and a narrow edge of gasket surface left. It held until the next rebuild when it was replaced. I filled a groove in a 3T block where the liner seals go with this cement in multilayers cured with a drop lite and filed and sanded smooth. A piston had broken and the rod knocked the liner out. We ran that 3T through two or three more liner changes with no problems.

Just called the Cat dealer ,and not avaliable any more .The replacment product is locktite 30540
I got smart over the yrs ,and frist time that I opened a can ,I would appy grease to the lid ,and that solved the sticking lid problem as long as the can lasted .
The compound must have changed in the last yrs .I think it was a better cement yrs ago

I'm going to try that trick. You ought to ask around at your local auto parts stores for GASGACINCH. I have a feeling its the same product you were using. You'd know as soon as you opened the can. Now I don't remember whether the CAT dealer used Gasgacinch or whether Gasgacinch was made by the same company that made CAT contact cement.

Save your old Cat cans, they might be collectables someday.

Along the topic of Cat discontinuing products, I used to really like the Cat "Cooling system inhibitor" that is no longer available. They have a "Cooling system conditioner" but it doesn't look like the same product. I used the Cat inhibitor product in all my engines and it really helped prevent rust in the older equipment.

Yes things are changing ,Many of the older products are no longer available ,becuse of envirmental concerns ,and manfacture liability legal concerns.
On the older cat cement cans ,I think I remember it saying in small letters on the side of the can that it "the cement " was manufactured for Caterpillar by Loctite .
If this was so ,Wonder why loctite never sold it on the market separetly ? Unless Cat had a patent on the cement .
Any ideas ,who manufactures Gasgscinch?

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
