Hey guys, i'm new to the forum. Found it today searching for my problem.
I have a cat 955l "13x".
Now with the issue.
While operating my cat today, i put it in reverse and there was a chatter from the left side track/final drive. It only did this when I was in reverse and the left clutch/brake was engaged. A buddy of mine runs a 955l everyday so i called him to come take a look. He said the track was to loose and was causing the track to bind/attempt to skip teeth on the final drive. So, we pumped the track grease fitting full and problem was fixed. Now a new problem arose that very instant making me think that the semi loose track wasn't the issue. Now when i'm in reverse "still only happens in reverse" and I apply the left clutch/brake "also same as before", the right final drive chatters and won't turn. I had 2 other guys there trying to help me diagnose but neither are sure. One guys thinks a bearing went out of the final drive and the other thinks that my clutch adjustments are sloppy and could be causing the right side to not fully engage. I feel that either of these problems would cause the chatter to happen more often than just in reverse while applying the left clutch, so I was looking for advice!

Thank you all!

Joel

Try adjusting the clutches to see if it makes any difference, if not, drain the final drives to see how much metal comes out, if no problem here, drain the bevel gear housing to see what comes out, remove the counterweight and pto cover and look inside to see what state the bevel gear and pinion is in.

Also check both your sprockets for side movement, that will tell condition of the hub bearings.
The biggest problem with the small loaders not steering is failure of the clutch release bearings or their cages.
If you have a release problem the tractor will push fine straight but stop and load the engine when trying to turn.

Bob,

The tractor pushes fine going straight even when using either steering clutch. The issue only arises when I'm in reverse with the left steering clutch pushed in. It runs fine when in reverse with no clutch engaged or right clutch pressed down. I'm not sure if that helps diagnose anything.

I suspect a problem with the Left brake band.

If the symptoms shift from side to side, check for cross shaft movement. (failed bearings).
When going straight the shaft will tend to center itself and appear normal.

Bob,
Is there a way to diagnose if it's just a brake band?

Old magnet,
How do I check for cross shaft movement?

I apologize, I'm a bit of a newbie.

You take off the counterweight and the PTO cover then get a pry bar behind the bevel gear, try moving it side ways, it should not move. Unfortunately, you can't see much through the top inspection covers on this particular machine, although you may be able to see the opposite clutch moving as you press each pedal (with the engine running) indicating the bevel gear bearings are worn out.
