Hey guys,

I have a Cat 955L 13X machine. I was loading dirt into my dump truck and all of the sudden I lost my hydraulics and hydro and also instantly smelt a burning smell. I'm guessing that a pump went on me but I wanted to check here being that you guys are way more knowledgeable than myself.
I quickly turned the machine off then waited about 20 min, restarted the machine to double check that I did in fact lost my hydraulics and hydro, I can confirm both are 100% gone and the burning smell quickly returned so I shut it down again.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks guys!!

Thanks,

Joel

You lost the rubber coupling discs between the convertor and the engine. Theres four of them, like hockey pucks.

Thanks for the reply Rome!
Is this the only thing that would cause both things to happen at the same time?

Is this a doable job in a field? I have a service manual for the machine but I can't find what you're referring to.

Thanks again for the help!

Yes, unless the shafts broke but unlikely plus you had the burnt smell of the couplings.
It can be done in the field, have to remove trans/convertor guard and work from underneath. The couplings are between the engine flywheel housing and torque convertor flange.
I can get you the torque for the coupling bolts tomorrow.
Don't understand why Cat didn't use a universal joint instead of those couplings, once they go your done! kinda scary if your on steep hill or working in fire.

Thanks Gary! I really appreciate the insight! How hard is it to separate the flywheel from the torque converter flange? Will I need to unbolt the engine and slide it forward or no?

Your welcome.
Not hard at all, just remove the nuts and bolts from flanges and the couplings can be removed, the flange will slide a little to get them out. No need to move engine.

Big sigh of relief! My last major project with this machine was replacing all bearings/gears in the right final drive. I don't know if I had another one of those types of projects in me.
So these 4 pucks will just slide right out and then I'll slide new ones in? No special alignment or anything? Do you know what the pucks are called in the parts manual? I have the page open but I want to make sure I order the correct parts.

Cat will have them in tomorrow. Thank you for the numbers.
Is there an easy was to check the alignment on the torque converter? I looked in the shop manual and it looks like it takes some type of special tool.

So I took the small guard off towards the front. The guard that I would go up through to change the oil. I've now found out that was not the guard that you were referring to. It looks like I have to take off the very large guard underneath? The guard that runs from the back of the engine all the way to the back of the machine. Is this correct? I figured I'd better ask before removing this guard as I have no
idea how I'll get it back on. It looks pretty heavy.
