hello guys . i have found an old cat 955 that has been laying out in the weather for the last 10-20 years.the guy wants 2k for it...it was driven to its resting spot and parked up cos it only would only turn to the right..it is in poor condition due to being in a high rainfall area..i would love to try and save it but i dont really have a clue..i know the motor was turning over about a year ago but would not quite fire, it coughed afew times..the exhuast has been covered with a jam tin..i want to go and have a crack at getting it going cos where it is it has to be driven out..any tips to awake it from its slumber & any one have pics of the controls & what they do..i think its from the late 50,s early 60,s..if i cant get it going its going to the scrappers which would be a shame..i need it drive about 3 mile to get to my place..its a 4cyl no turbo...thanks

bleed the fuel injectors while cranking it over and that may help it start. you could try the ether bunny, (aerostart), if it is firing but wont take off sounds like a fuel issue, there are some guys that are pretty knowledgable over in WA that are on this forum or some other forums, that could try and guide you over the phone, or befriend a good diesel mechanic and have him help you get it running.

Your 955 should be a 12a serie with d315 motor in

I would be looking at fuel blockage or dirty fuel if it ran ok before it was parked it might just have stuck rings making the compression a bit low so it might take a bit of cranking to make enough heat to fire
either way i would try rmyram suggestion first might need to squirt two cans of giggle gas ( Aero start ) at once to get enough either in it just watch it cause it will rattle like all get out . If it wont fire straight away dont use any more you have most likely a fuel problem thats just me though
I dont no if you would crack a piston but when motors really rattle like they do on giggle gas it makes me nervous but it can get you going some times and out of a tight spot sorry for waffelling

be careful using aero start, you never need more than one can to get an engine going, and when those diesels are really rattling like they do on ether, it is extremely hard on rings and pushrods, I have seen many diesels that have had broken rings and bent pushrods from using too much ether.

i went there today & after bleeding fuel system & hot wiring starter i got it running..it amazes me that it goes, it is so rusty that there are rust holes thru the tappet cover.all the oils are milky.after running it for a few minutes it purrs like a new one..i had to soak the tracks with penetrine as they were siezed and would not turn..it just kept stalling until i got it rocking back & forward then off she went..it only steers to the left as i cant pull back the right steering clutch lever [which is why it was parked 14 years ago}...any way i crab walked it the 4 miles back to my place and by the time i got it home it was overheating & spraying oil out of crank seal & the tracks were so loose i was sure they would fall off & i couldnt be happier..what a legendary machine...any clues on the steering clutch issue?

My recommendation is to get through the engine spraying oil out the crank seal and overheating issue first. There maybe unforeseen EXPENSIVE problems in the engine that need to be addressed first before sinking money into Steering Clutches. You may find the engine repairs to be so expensive that it will not be worth saving the machine, especially if the undercarriage is worn really bad, a better condition machine maybe a cheaper alternative and using this one for parts.

They're good machines. Parts are readily available too. You can have a new radiator core built if yours is rotten.

Check your linkages on the steering clutch first. It could be as simple as a stick jammed in there causing it not to work. That's a tough job pulling the steering clutches on these loaders as the loader frame is in the way(the pipe brace that crosses right above them specifically).

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
