Hello. Brand new to cat and to this forum. Thank you in advance for any input and advice you all can offer.

I'm looking to purchase a cat 94 (80H1666 - serial #). I had a buddy who is a cat mechanic look it over and he gave it overall a thumbs up for its age and use.
My question is, this particular model does not have ROPS on it (I've noticed some of them do, some don't). being very new to using this type of machinery,
I think it might be a good idea add this to this machine. Is that possible? where might i find one to purchase or can it be fabricated? the ones Ive seen have mounting hardware/places
on the sides, however the one I'm looking at does not.
I plan on doing mostly dirt movement on a small farm and pushing together some burn piles but an occasional tree going over doesnt seem to unlikely, which is why I'm thinking the ROPS.

thank you for any insight you all can offer.
Cheers!
Jr

Also, has anyone ever heard of someone building their own ROPS?
I have a buddy who is a metal fabricator and showed him what a ROPS consisted of and he didnt think it would be very difficult.

Is there plans/drawings out there I could see or purchase that has dimensions/layout of it?

thanks for any input!
Cheers

Hi, cptcrnch1.
As i understand it, a ROPS is not just a 'steel structure over your head'. A genuine ROPS - Roll Over Protection Structure - is engineered to take the weight of the whole machine falling on it from a height of 10 feet and remain substantially intact. As distinct from a FOPS - Falling Object Protection Structure - a ROPS is intended to take that kind of impact from any direction. This includes having mounting brackets that will take that same impact.

There were a LOTTTT of Cat 941s fitted with ROPS canopies. A few enquiries on the 'net may very well find one, mounting brackets and all. The 941 loader frame is substantial enough that the mounting brackets can be welded on without additional reinforcement.

Just my 0.02.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
