How would you guys approach repair of this broken "ear"? Weld repair? Is it cast steel or cast iron?

It is cast steel and can be welded. Grind a good v-joint and 7018 it back together again.

Thanks for the quick response. That's what I had in mind but wanted to make sure before I messed up.

Its cast steel.I would try to remove the bolt holding the ear on the frame ,so That the crack could be cleaned up from rust and dirt ,taper the top edge to a V with a grinder reposition the ear buy tightening the bolt again .Weld the crack starting deep in the crack wiith a frist pass clean each pass of weld as the crack is built up .Use 7018 low hydgene welding rod .
Check to see if all other bolts ,top and inside the frame are tight holding the hard bar secure to the frame

Hi Team,
methods for repair are correct but I believe the main frame and that track frame mount arm are fabricated--not that it matters--just wanted to say but not flame anyone.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

Fabricated it is, you can sort of make out a welded joint at the track frame mounting plate.

it appears the recoil spring isn't sitting in the block properly--looks a little elevated. My block seats had gotten pounded and angled somewhat, had to grind them flat.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
